John told his father-story.
He never knew his dad. He only met him after he left school. And even now he is not like a dad to him – more like a distant friend.
But he had a grandfather who taught him about life and how to live it. He gave him that feeling of security. He was a father to him.
As we went on describing what the effect of father absence could be on a child, he shook his head and said he did not experience it, because of his grandfather’s goodness.
A good mentor and role model can substitute for the missing dad. And in many cases it is the only way a young person’s life can turn out differently. Never under-estimate grandfather-goodness!
